The GSPCA has voiced concerns over the future of sea-based seal pup transfers after Iris Freight warned its service between Jersey and Guernsey is under financial threat.

Environmental and wildlife conservation efforts in the Channel Islands could face a logistical setback if the Channel Chieftain V ceases operations. Over the last ten years, the vessel has been instrumental in transporting sick seal pups from Jersey to a specialist sanctuary in Guernsey. Experts prefer sea transit over air travel for these animals, as altitude changes can negatively impact the health of already compromised pups.

Steve Byrne of the GSPCA emphasized the success of this partnership, noting that ten seals have been successfully relocated for treatment via the freight link. The specialized nature of the vessel allows for the safe and efficient movement of large, sensitive marine mammals that might otherwise struggle with traditional transport methods. The potential loss of the service would force rescue organizations to find more expensive and less ideal alternatives.

“When you’re transporting seals, ideally you want to do it by sea. Taking them up in planes… can affect the animals when they’re going up into the higher altitudes.”

The vessel’s diverse cargo history includes everything from car parts and dental tools to a fiberglass zebra. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the service even transitioned into a limited passenger ferry, moving 3,000 people when other travel options were restricted. This adaptability has made the boat a cornerstone of regional resilience.
